Have you ever heard of the phrase "style above all" lol, when I was in college (Berkeley) something interesting happened to me, here is the story:
As expected, in college you have all the academic and social pressures. Most students try to fit in and others don't care if they do. For me, It was about learning as much as possible, networking and getting out of there. When it came to fashion, the majority of the students wore casual and leisure clothing, me on the other hand, took a different approach. Since I've always been influenced by the classic and elegance style of men's fashion, I always wore a suit because this was how I felt comfortable and how I believe a gentleman should dress.
One summer, there was a class excursion to the Poconos in New Jersey. The dress code was casual since we were going to be outdoors and my classmates dared me to wear a suit. I decided to be bold and wore a suit even though I knew it was going to be a challenging experience. My classmates made fun and in all honesty, I was uncomfortable because of the heat, humidity and the lack of practicality.
That bold experience taught me an important lesson, that sometimes we need to stand out in order to be in. After the ordeal, my classmates and professors thought I was a bit crazy but more importantly respected me as a fashion leader and risk taker. From that incident, some classmates that had fashion startups wanted me to be part of their team, the fashion club ask me to participate in their endeavors and professors connected me with fashion industry leaders to see how we could collaborate.
